Rent A Motorhome In Australia, New Zealand or the USA

Each of these three countries suits a different kind of road trip. Australia rewards long drives between coastal towns and outback stretches. New Zealand packs mountains, fjords and coastline into short distances. The USA offers national parks and highway routes on a continental scale.

Motorhome Hire in Australia

Australia suits travellers who want distance. The Melbourne to Cairns east coast run, the Great Ocean Road and the Red Centre all work as campervan routes, though gaps between towns are longer than most visitors expect. Pick up at airport or city depots in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Perth and Darwin. Families favour 4-berth and 6-berth motorhomes, while 4WD campers open up unsealed routes standard vehicles are not permitted on.

Campervan Hire in New Zealand

New Zealand fits a lot into a small footprint, so a shorter hire covers more ground than the same trip in Australia. Most campervan travellers head for the South Island, picking up in Christchurch or Queenstown, with Auckland leading the North Island. Self-containment matters here: whether a campervan carries its own water and toilet facilities affects where you can legally park overnight. Crossing islands means booking the Cook Strait ferry separately.

RV Rental in the USA

Americans say RV rather than campervan or motorhome, and the vehicles run larger as a result. Class C motorhomes are the common family choice, with compact campervans for couples. Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Denver and Orlando are the busiest pickup cities, and one-way routes between them are widely offered. Check the mileage terms first: some US suppliers cap daily miles and sell extra mileage as a package rather than offering unlimited miles.

The table below shows how hiring differs across all three countries.

Australia New Zealand USA
Drives on Left Left Right
Local term Campervan, motorhome Campervan, motorhome RV, motorhome
Distance measured in Kilometres Kilometres Miles
Peak season December to February December to March June to August
Quieter, cheaper months May to August May to August October to April
Typical trip length 10 to 21 days 7 to 14 days 7 to 14 days
Common vehicle choice 2-berth campervans and 4-berth motorhomes; 4WD campers for remote routes 2-berth and 4-berth campervans, often self-contained Class C motorhomes and campervans
One-way hire Widely available between major cities; fees vary by supplier Available, including between islands; ferry booking is separate Widely available; fees vary by supplier and route
Worth knowing Distances between towns are long. Plan fuel and overnight stops in advance Self-containment affects where you can legally stay overnight Mileage may be capped or sold as a package rather than unlimited

Which Campervan or Motorhome Suits Your Trip?

The right vehicle depends on how many people are travelling, how much you want on board, and where you plan to drive. Larger motorhomes carry more but need more room to park and manoeuvre. Compact campervans go almost anywhere but ask you to use campground facilities.

How to Hire a Campervan, Motorhome or RV

Hiring a campervan or motorhome through MotorhomeHire.com takes three steps. Search, compare, book. Here is what happens at each stage.

MotorhomeHire.com search form for choosing pickup, travel dates, return location and passenger details

Search Your Dates & Locations

Choose your pickup country, city or airport, then set your travel dates. Add how many people are travelling so only vehicles with enough berths appear.

Comparing motorhome vehicle options, berth count, inclusions, insurance and price

Compare Vehicles & Inclusions

See campervans and motorhomes from different suppliers side by side. Check berths, transmission, kilometre allowance, insurance and what each rate includes before you decide.

Online motorhome booking confirmation with payment card, licence, pickup date and depot collection

Book Online & Collect

Book your vehicle online and your confirmation arrives by email with the depot address and pickup instructions. Bring your licence and a credit card to collect.

Campervan or Motorhome: What’s the Difference?

A campervan is a van converted for sleeping and cooking. The living space and the driving cab form one connected shell, so you step between them without going outside. Most campervans sleep two, carry a kitchenette and a fridge, and rely on campground facilities for showers and toilets, though larger models include both on board.

A motorhome is built on a truck or bus chassis with a purpose-built living body behind the cab. The extra size buys a fixed bathroom with toilet and shower, a full kitchen, larger water tanks and separate sleeping areas. Motorhomes sleep from two to six, so they suit families and longer trips where being self-contained matters

The line between the two is not fixed, and suppliers apply the terms differently. As a working rule: if it started as a van, it is a campervan; if the living body was built onto a chassis, it is a motorhome. Size, berth count and whether there is a bathroom on board matter more to your trip than the label.

What’s Included When You Hire a Motorhome

Most campervan and motorhome rates cover the vehicle and its standard equipment. Insurance excess add-ons, extras and one-way fees are usually priced separately. Each vehicle listing sets out both, so you can see the full cost before you book.

What Comes With the Vehicle

Standard equipment is fitted to the vehicle and included in the rental rate.

  • Sleeping: Bedding, linen, pillows and towels for the number of berths booked.
  • Kitchen: Gas stove, fridge, sink, cookware, cutlery and crockery.
  • Water and power: Fresh water tank, grey water tank, house battery and mains hookup lead for motorhomes.
  • Bathroom: Toilet and shower on self-contained vehicles, with tank capacity matched to the berth count.
  • Safety: Smoke alarm, fire extinguisher and first aid basics.
  • On the road: 24/7 roadside assistance through the supplier for breakdowns and mechanical faults.

What’s Charged Separately and Costs Extra

Optional or supplier-set and appear as separate line items during booking.

  • Insurance excess reduction: Lowers the amount you are liable for if the vehicle is damaged.
  • Bond or security deposit: Held as a credit card preauthorisation at pickup, released after return.
  • Kilometre or mileage packages: Applies where the rate includes a daily allowance rather than unlimited distance.
  • One-way and relocation fees: Charged when you drop off at a different branch, on routes that allow it..
  • Additional drivers: Named on the rental agreement, with a fee on some vehicles.
  • Extras: Child seats, baby capsules, camping chairs, tables, GPS and bike racks, subject to availability.

Popular Road Trips

A campervan works best when the route is the point. These four trips start from cities where vehicles are easy to collect, and each one suits a different length of hire.

Frequently Asked Questions – FAQs

A full, valid car licence covers all campervans, motorhomes and RVs available through MotorhomeHire.com. If your licence is not printed in English, carry an official translation or an International Driving Permit alongside it.

Minimum age is set by each rental supplier and varies by country and vehicle. Younger drivers below a supplier’s standard threshold are often accepted with a surcharge or a different insurance option, rather than being refused outright. Enter your driver age at the search stage and the results will show vehicles you are eligible to hire.

It depends on the supplier, but both models are common. Some rates include unlimited kilometres or miles. Others include a daily allowance and sell additional distance as a mileage package, which is more common in the USA than in Australia or New Zealand. The kilometre or mileage terms appear on every vehicle listing, so check them before booking a long route.

Yes, on most vehicles. Any additional driver must be named on the rental agreement and meet the same licence and age conditions as the primary driver, and some suppliers charge a fee per additional driver. Add them at the depot, since an unnamed driver is generally not covered by the vehicle’s insurance if something happens on the road.

A bond, also called a security deposit, is an amount the supplier holds against damage or breaches of the rental agreement. It is usually taken as a preauthorisation on a credit card in the primary driver’s name at pickup, rather than charged. The supplier releases it after the vehicle is returned in acceptable condition. Bond amounts and release timeframes are set by each supplier and shown before you book.

A self-contained campervan or motorhome carries its own fresh water, waste water storage and toilet, so it can be used without external facilities for a set period. In New Zealand, self-containment affects where you may legally stay overnight, and many councils restrict freedom camping to certified vehicles. Check the vehicle’s self-containment status on the listing before booking.

Yes, on many routes. One-way hire is widely offered between major cities in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, though the routes available depend on the supplier and the vehicle. A one-way or relocation fee usually applies and is shown in the total before you book.

Depot opening hours are set by each supplier, and most are not open around the clock, including at airport locations. Check the depot’s hours against your flight arrival before booking, allowing time for the vehicle handover as well as customs and baggage. If your flight lands late, either book accommodation for the first night and collect the next morning, or ask the supplier whether an after-hours collection is possible.

Pet policies are set by each supplier. Some accept dogs, often with an additional cleaning deposit or a restriction on which vehicles, and others do not permit animals at all. Child seats and baby capsules can usually be added during booking, subject to availability, and child restraint rules differ by country. Filter for pet-friendly vehicles and add child seats at the search stage rather than at the depot.

What you pay depends on five things: the size of the vehicle, how long you hire it for, the time of year, where you pick it up, and how much cover you add. Peak summer weeks cost more than shoulder season, larger motorhomes cost more than 2-berth campervans, and longer hires usually bring the daily rate down. Search your dates to see live rates for the vehicles available.

Usually yes, with permission. Suppliers commonly allow ferry travel on established crossings such as the Cook Strait between New Zealand’s islands and Bass Strait to Tasmania, but the rental terms may require you to notify them first. You book the ferry separately from the vehicle, and ferry operators price by vehicle length, so a 6-berth motorhome costs more to carry than a 2-berth campervan.

In Australia and New Zealand, motorhome hire is charged by calendar day, so the pickup and return dates both count as full rental days. A Monday pickup and Friday return equals five days. In the USA, rentals are usually calculated by night, so the same Monday-to-Friday booking normally equals four nights.
