Campervan & Motorhome Hire Prices in Melbourne
Campervan hire in Melbourne typically costs from $86 per night for a compact 2-berth in the off-season, rising to $302 per night for a 6-berth motorhome in peak summer. Your final price depends on the vehicle type, the season, the length of hire, and any extras you add. Specific price ranges for different vehicle types include:
- 2-Berth campervans: $86 to $144 per day
- 2-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $167 to $233 per day
- 4-Berth campervans: $104 to $168 per day
- 4-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $202 to $277 per day
- 6-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $223 to $302 per day
- 4WD campervans: $148 to $312 per day (depending on the berth)
Cheap campervan hire in Melbourne
The cheapest campervan hire in Melbourne is usually a basic 2-berth van from a value brand such as JUCY, Spaceships, Travellers Autobarn or Campervan Village, booked outside school holidays and outside December and January. To find the lowest price, book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead, avoid one-way relocation fees by choosing a return hire, and consider the Standard Liability option rather than upgrading to maximum cover if you are comfortable with a higher excess. Relocation deals and promo codes can reduce the daily rate further on selected dates. Search live prices for your travel dates to see the cheapest vehicles available.
What affects Melbourne hire prices
Several factors move the daily rate up or down from the table above. Understanding these helps you decide when, what, and how to book for the best value.
- Season and demand. Peak season runs across summer, with Christmas/New Year, Easter, and Victorian school holidays being the priciest times. Melbourne’s event calendar adds its own spikes. The Australian Open in January, the Formula 1 Grand Prix in March, the AFL Grand Final in late September or early October, and the Spring Racing Carnival (Melbourne Cup) in early November all tighten availability and lift rates. Peak pricing can sit 30 to 50% above off-peak. The shoulder seasons of autumn (March to mid-April) and late spring (October to November) bring balmier weather, thinner crowds, and generally the lowest rates for the same vehicle, though watch that the Grand Prix and Cup weekends buck that trend.
- Vehicle class and berth. A 2-Berth campervan can start from around $86 in off-peak, while a 6-Berth motorhome with wet bathroom and full kitchen can reach $302 in peak. Luxury and 4WD models sit at the top of the range.
- Rental duration. Longer bookings usually earn a discounted daily rate. Many brands drop the per-day price on hires of 21+ days.
- Insurance option. Upgrading from Standard Liability to Liability Reduction or Maximum Cover typically adds $30 on a budget camper to $119 per day on a luxury motorhome, in exchange for a lower excess and a smaller (or zero) bond hold on your credit card.
- One-way relocation fees. Picking up in Melbourne and dropping off in another city can add a one-way fee depending on the route, brand, and whether the direction matches current relocation demand. Melbourne to Adelaide and Melbourne to Sydney are common corridors, so both standard one-way hires and heavily discounted relocation deals surface on these routes more often. When the company needs a vehicle moved in your direction, the fee can be reduced sharply or waived altogether, occasionally dropping to as little as a dollar a day with fuel thrown in, so it is worth checking relocation listings alongside a standard quote before you book.
- Add-on extras. GPS units, bike racks, camping chairs and tables, portable BBQs, second drivers, and child seats are usually charged per hire or per day. Bedding packs and kitchen kits are included by some brands and extra with others.
- Kilometre policy. Most motorhome hires include unlimited kilometres. Some campervan hires like Campervan Village apply a daily cap (often 200 km/day), with an excess-kilometre charge above that. A Great Ocean Road and Grampians loop clocks up distance fast, so unlimited-kilometre vehicles are cheaper for longer touring.
- Fuel. Always paid by the renter. Larger 6-Berth motorhomes use noticeably more fuel than a 2-Berth van, so factor it into your total trip budget, especially for inland runs to the High Country or longer coastal drives.
- Booking lead time. Booking 125+ days ahead typically gives the best combination of price with early bird discounts and the widest vehicle choice. Last-minute rentals in peak season tend to be significantly more expensive due to limited availability, often leaving only the largest or smallest vehicles.
- Driver age and additional drivers. Most companies require the driver to be at least 21, and drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge with some brands. Adding a second driver at the counter usually costs a flat fee per hire. Note that most motorised campervans and motorhomes can be driven on a standard car licence provided they’re under 4.5 tonnes GVM.

Insurance, Bonds and Excess Explained
All Melbourne motorhome and campervan hires come with basic insurance, yet you remain responsible for a specific excess in the event of vehicle damage. Familiarizing yourself with the bond and your liability reduction options prior to booking will help you prevent unexpected issues at pickup. With standard liability, you are responsible for the initial portion of any damage costs, and the supplier will place a corresponding bond hold on your credit card when you collect the vehicle. This bond is refunded once the vehicle is brought back without damage.
Purchasing a liability reduction option decreases your excess and frequently eliminates the bond requirement for an extra daily charge. If your goal is to minimize out-of-pocket risk and avoid a substantial bond hold, evaluating this upgrade during the booking process is highly recommended. Both the bond and any chosen liability reduction fee must be settled at pickup using a credit or debit card. Since most suppliers decline cash for the bond and some reject pre-paid cards, be sure to present a standard card registered in the main driver's name.
Insurance tiers explained
Most Melbourne rental brands offer three insurance levels. Names differ between brands, but the structure is consistent.
| Tier | What it covers | Typical excess | Typical bond hold | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Liability | Base-level damage cover included in the daily rate. You pay the full excess if the vehicle is damaged. | $5,000-$7,500 excess per claim | $5,000-$7,500 on credit card | Travellers who accept a higher excess in exchange for the lowest daily rate |
| Liability Reduction | Mid-tier upgrade. Reduces the excess in exchange for a daily fee. | $1,500-$2,500 excess per claim | $1,500-$2,500 on credit card | Most renters - balances daily cost and financial risk |
| Maximum Cover | Top tier. Reduces the excess to zero or near-zero. Often includes single-vehicle rollover, windscreen, tyres, and awning damage. | $0-$250 excess per claim | $0-$500 on credit card | First-time renters, international visitors, and travellers wanting full peace of mind |
Exact bond and excess amounts vary by brand, vehicle, and booking dates. Some brands use different names, for example, "Standard", "Liability Reduction Option", and "Maximum Cover" at one brand; "Low Road", "Middle Road", and "High Road" at another. The tier structure is the same either way.
What the bond actually is
The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on the driver's credit or debit card, not a charge. Funds are frozen on the card at pickup and released when the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, refuelled to the same level, and clean inside. If damage occurs during the hire, the brand deducts the excess (or the repair cost up to the excess ceiling) from the bond before releasing the balance.
Most brands require a physical credit or debit card in the driver's name to hold the bond. Cash and pre-paid cards are typically not accepted.
Reducing the excess
You can reduce or eliminate the excess in three ways:
- Upgrade the insurance tier at the time of booking or at pickup, usually the simplest option.
- Buy third-party excess cover from an independent travel insurer, which reimburses your excess if you claim on the rental brand's Standard Liability. This can be cheaper than the brand's own top tier, but you pay the excess first and reclaim it later.
- Add windscreen, tyre, awning, or single-vehicle-rollover cover as separate optional extras with some brands, if you only want to close specific damage gaps.
Best Road Trips from Melbourne
Melbourne is the starting point for some of Australia’s best campervan routes, from rugged coastline to alpine country and wine regions. Here are six road trips worth building your itinerary around.
- Melbourne to the Great Ocean Road Follow the Princes Freeway southwest to Torquay, then trace the winding, dramatic coastline past Bells Beach and through the Otway rainforest to finish at the towering limestone stacks of the Twelve Apostles. Widely considered one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world.
- Melbourne to the Yarra Valley Head northeast via the Eastern Freeway (M3) for just under an hour straight into the heart of this premier wine region (around Yarra Glen and Healesville). Pair world-class cellar doors and farm-fresh food with easy driving that is ideal for a short first trip.
- Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula Travel an hour south of Melbourne via the M11 to the heart of the peninsula (around Rosebud or Rye). This accessible coastal escape combines bay beaches, rolling vineyards, and geothermal hot springs, perfect for a relaxed weekend loop.
- Melbourne to Phillip Island Take a direct drive southeast via the South Gippsland Highway onto the island, finishing near Cowes or the Nobbies. A short, highly rewarding escape from the city to watch the famous nightly penguin parade, explore surf beaches, and take in the local wildlife.
- Melbourne to Grampians National Park Head northwest via the Western Highway (M8) directly to Halls Gap at the eastern foot of the ranges. Discover a magical, rugged mountain landscape filled with hiking trails, stunning sandstone lookouts, and rich Aboriginal rock art that is a favourite for nature lovers.
- Melbourne to Gippsland & Wilsons Promontory Travel southeast via the South Gippsland Highway straight to Tidal River at the southern tip of Wilsons Promontory National Park. This deep wilderness run rewards you with pristine white-sand beaches, wombat-filled bushwalks, and quiet coastal camping.
One-way campervan and motorhome rentals from Melbourne
A one-way rental lets you pick up your motorhome or campervan in Melbourne and drop it off at a different depot, either elsewhere on the mainland or across in Tasmania. From Melbourne, the common one-way runs head to Sydney up the coast, to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road or the inland route, or further afield to Brisbane and beyond, so you can travel in one direction without backtracking to Melbourne. To continue to Tasmania, selected national brands allow the vehicle to travel on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Geelong to Devonport, subject to the brand’s approval and the ferry cost.
How one-way pricing works
One-way relocation fees vary by route, brand, direction, season, and current fleet-repositioning demand. On the mainland, expect a set one-way fee for finishing in a different city such as Sydney or Adelaide rather than Melbourne, with longer interstate routes generally carrying a higher fee. For a Tasmanian drop-off, the total also includes the Spirit of Tasmania fare for the vehicle and passengers, and not every mainland fleet permits its vehicles to cross to Tasmania, so confirm this with the provider before you book.
If you are flexible on dates and direction, look for relocation deals. Brands often need to reposition vehicles between depots after peak season and release those hires at heavily discounted daily rates with a limited number of days and a set fuel allowance. Relocation hires suit travellers with time to spare and a fixed direction to travel.
Every one-way hire is subject to the receiving depot’s opening hours and drop-off inspection process, so plan your final day to arrive during business hours.
