How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Brisbane
Campervan and motorhome hire in Brisbane typically starts from around $80 per day for a 2-berth campervan and rises to $300 per day for a 6-berth motorhome with a bathroom. Your daily rate depends on the vehicle size, whether it has an onboard bathroom, the season, the length of hire and the inclusions you choose, such as liability reduction. The list below shows indicative from-prices by vehicle class so you can budget before you search live rates. Specific price ranges for different vehicle types include:
- 2-Berth campervans: $80 to $124 per day
- 2-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $168 to $219 per day
- 4-Berth campervans: $100 to $161 per day
- 4-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $197 to $278 per day
- 6-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $220 to $300 per day
- 4WD campervans: $169 to $372 per day (depending on the berth)
Cheap campervan hire in Brisbane
The cheapest campervan hire in Brisbane is usually a basic 2-berth van from a value brand booked outside school holidays and outside the December to January peak. To find the lowest daily rate, book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead, avoid one-way relocation fees by choosing a return hire, and consider the Standard Liability option rather than upgrading to full cover if you are comfortable with a higher excess. Brisbane is a major mainland hub with a large fleet, so relocation deals and promo codes can cut the daily rate sharply on selected dates and routes.
What affects Brisbane hire prices
Several factors move the daily rate up or down from the table above. Understanding these helps you decide when, what, and how to book for the best value.
- Season and demand. Peak season, roughly mid-December to late January, Easter, Queensland school holidays, and long weekends, can lift the daily rate by 30 to 50% above off-peak. Brisbane also runs against the southern-city pattern: the dry, mild winter from June to August is a popular travel season across Queensland, so those months are not automatically cheap. City events add demand too, with the Ekka (Royal Queensland Show) at the Brisbane Showgrounds from 8 to 16 August 2026 and Brisbane Festival running 4 to 26 September 2026, opening with Riverfire on 5 September. The lowest rates usually fall in the hot, humid wet-season months of February and March, and in the shoulder window of late October to November before the Christmas rush, provided you avoid school holidays.
- Vehicle class and berth. A 2-berth campervan sits at the bottom of the range, while a 6-berth motorhome with a wet bathroom and full kitchen sits near the top. Luxury and 4WD models sit at the highest daily rates.
- Rental duration. Longer bookings usually earn a discounted daily rate. Many brands drop the per-day price on hires of 21+ days, which suits a run up the Queensland coast.
- Insurance option. Upgrading from Standard Liability to a liability-reduction or maximum-cover option adds a daily fee, in exchange for a lower excess and a smaller or zero bond hold on your credit card.
- One-way relocation fees. Picking up in Brisbane and dropping off in another city can add a one-way fee depending on the route, brand, and whether the direction matches current relocation demand.
- Add-on extras. GPS units, bike racks, camping chairs and tables, portable BBQs, second drivers, and child seats are usually charged per hire or per day. Bedding packs and kitchen kits are included by some brands and extra with others.
- Kilometre policy. Most motorhome hires include unlimited kilometres. Some campervan hires apply a daily cap with an excess-kilometre charge above that. Long coastal runs, such as Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Coast, or all the way to Cairns, are cheaper on an unlimited-kilometre vehicle.
- Fuel. Always paid by the renter. Larger 6-berth motorhomes use noticeably more fuel than a 2-berth van, so factor fuel into your total trip budget, especially for long coastal or inland drives. Note that Brisbane, unlike some cities, has toll roads (the Clem7, Legacy Way, Gateway, and AirportlinkM7 among them), so budget for tolls and check how your hire company handles them.
- Booking lead time. Booking well in advance usually gives the best combination of price and vehicle choice, with early-bird discounts from some brands. Late bookings in peak season often pay more and land on the last vehicles left in the fleet.
- Driver age and additional drivers. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge with some brands. Adding a second driver at the counter usually costs a flat fee per hire.

Insurance, Bonds and Excess Explained
Every Brisbane hire comes with standard insurance, and each vehicle has a set excess and a refundable bond. The excess is the amount you would pay towards damage in an at-fault incident. The bond is a refundable security amount, usually held on a credit card at pick-up and returned after drop-off if the vehicle comes back undamaged. You can lower the excess by adding an optional liability reduction, which most travellers choose for peace of mind on longer trips. Confirm the exact figures for your chosen vehicle before you book, since cover and bond amounts vary by model and supplier.
Insurance tiers explained
Most Brisbane rental brands offer three insurance levels. Names differ between brands, but the structure is consistent.
| Tier | What it covers | Typical excess | Typical bond hold | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Liability | Base-level damage cover included in the daily rate. You pay the full excess if the vehicle is damaged. | $5,000-$7,500 excess per claim | $5,000-$7,500 on credit card | Travellers who accept a higher excess in exchange for the lowest daily rate |
| Liability Reduction | Mid-tier upgrade. Reduces the excess in exchange for a daily fee. | $1,500-$2,500 excess per claim | $1,500-$2,500 on credit card | Most renters - balances daily cost and financial risk |
| Maximum Cover | Top tier. Reduces the excess to zero or near-zero. Often includes single-vehicle rollover, windscreen, tyres, and awning damage. | $0-$250 excess per claim | $0-$500 on credit card | First-time renters, international visitors, and travellers wanting full peace of mind |
Exact bond and excess amounts vary by brand, vehicle, and booking dates. Some brands use different names, for example, "Standard", "Liability Reduction Option", and "Maximum Cover" at one brand; "Low Road", "Middle Road", and "High Road" at another. The tier structure is the same either way.
What the bond actually is
The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on the driver's credit or debit card, not a charge. Funds are frozen on the card at pickup and released when the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, refuelled to the same level, and clean inside. If damage occurs during the hire, the brand deducts the excess (or the repair cost up to the excess ceiling) from the bond before releasing the balance.
Most brands require a physical credit or debit card in the driver's name to hold the bond. Cash and pre-paid cards are typically not accepted.
Reducing the excess
You can reduce or eliminate the excess in three ways:
- Upgrade the insurance tier at the time of booking or at pickup, usually the simplest option.
- Buy third-party excess cover from an independent travel insurer, which reimburses your excess if you claim on the rental brand's Standard Liability. This can be cheaper than the brand's own top tier, but you pay the excess first and reclaim it later.
- Add windscreen, tyre, awning, or single-vehicle-rollover cover as separate optional extras with some brands, if you only want to close specific damage gaps.
Best Road Trips from Brisbane
Brisbane is a natural launch point for a Queensland road trip, with coast, hinterland and island destinations all within a day’s drive. Collect your motorhome near Brisbane Airport, then choose a short getaway or a longer one way run up or down the coast. These are the routes travellers ask for most.
- Brisbane to Gold Coast Surf beaches and theme parks make this the easiest escape.
- Brisbane to Sunshine Coast Noosa Heads, Mooloolaba and Australia Zoo suit families and first time campers.
- Brisbane Hinterland (Scenic Rim or Blackall Range) Head south to the Scenic Rim or north to the Blackall Range for rainforest drives, lookouts and hinterland campgrounds close to the city.
- Brisbane to Hervey Bay The gateway to K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) and seasonal whale watching.
- Brisbane to Cairns The classic Pacific Coast Way run up the Queensland coast, ideal one way.
- Brisbane to Sydney A popular one way route down the east coast through northern New South Wales.
One-way campervan and motorhome rentals from Brisbane
A one-way rental lets you pick up your motorhome or campervan in Brisbane and drop it off at a different depot elsewhere on the mainland. From Brisbane, the common one-way runs head north up the Queensland coast to Cairns via the Sunshine Coast and the Great Barrier Reef, or south to Sydney and Melbourne, so you can drive the length of the east coast without doubling back. Major national brands operate depots in each of these cities, which is what makes cross-country one-way hire straightforward.
How one-way pricing works
One-way relocation fees vary by route, brand, direction, season, and current fleet-repositioning demand. Expect a set one-way fee added to your hire for finishing in a different city, and note that not every fleet permits every route, so confirm your intended drop-off with the provider before you book. Fees on popular east-coast corridors are typically modest by international standards, though they climb on longer or less-travelled routes.
If you are flexible on dates and direction, look for relocation deals. Brands often need to reposition vehicles between depots after peak season and release those hires at heavily discounted daily rates, sometimes as low as a few dollars a day, with a limited number of days and a set fuel allowance. Relocation hires suit travellers with time to spare and a fixed direction to travel.
Every one-way hire is subject to the receiving depot’s opening hours and drop-off inspection process, so plan your final day to arrive during business hours.
