How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Cairns?
Motorhome and campervan hire prices in Cairns typically range from $80 for an entry-level 2-berth campervan in off-peak to $304 for a 6-berth or luxury motorhome in peak season per day. The final rate depends on vehicle size, brand, season, trip length, insurance option, and how far in advance you book. The table below shows indicative from-prices per day by berth class. Specific price ranges for different vehicle types include:
- 2-Berth campervans: $80 to $139 per day
- 2-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $169 to $250 per day
- 4-Berth campervans: $111 to $163 per day
- 4-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $192 to $283 per day
- 6-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $206 to $304 per day
- 4WD campervans: $150 to $346 per day (depending on the berth)
Cheap campervan hire in Cairns
The cheapest campervan hire in Cairns is usually a basic 2-berth van from a value brand like Spaceships, JUCY, Camperman or Travellers Autobarn, booked outside school holidays and outside the June to November peak. To find the lowest price, book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead, avoid one-way relocation fees by choosing a return hire, and check the Standard Liability option rather than upgrading to Maximum Cover if you are comfortable with a higher excess. Relocation deals and promo codes can further reduce the daily rate on selected dates. Search live prices for your travel dates to see the cheapest vehicles available. Factors affecting prices include seasonal demand, trip duration and vehicle features. Booking well in advance and travelling during the wet-season shoulder months can lead to significant savings. Many companies offer discounts for long-term rentals, and some provide unlimited kilometres in their packages.
What affects Cairns hire prices
Several factors move the daily rate up or down from the table above. Understanding these helps you decide when, what and how to book for the best value.
- Season and demand. Cairns peak season (roughly June to November, plus Easter and Queensland school holidays) can lift the daily rate by 30%-50% above off-peak. Shoulder months such as April, May and October typically deliver the lowest rates for the same vehicle, with the wet season bringing tropical rain but cheaper hire.
- Vehicle class and berth. A 2-Berth campervan can start from around $80 in off-peak, while a 6-Berth motorhome with wet bathroom and full kitchen can reach $304 in peak. Luxury and 4WD models sit at the top of the range.
- Rental duration. Longer bookings usually earn a discounted daily rate. Many brands drop the per-day price on hires of 21 days or more.
- Insurance option. Upgrading from Standard Liability to a liability-reduction or maximum-cover option adds a daily fee, in exchange for a lower excess and a smaller or zero bond hold on your credit card.
- One-way relocation fees. Picking up in Cairns and dropping off in another city such as Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne can add a one-way fee depending on the route, brand and whether the direction matches current relocation demand.
- Add-on extras. GPS units, bike racks, camping chairs and tables, portable BBQs, second drivers and child seats are usually charged per hire or per day. Bedding packs and kitchen kits are included by some brands and extra with others.
- Kilometre policy. Most motorhome hires include unlimited kilometres. Some campervan hires apply a daily cap (often around 200 km per day), with an excess-kilometre charge above that. Long-distance drives like Cairns to Cape York or Cairns to Brisbane are cheaper on an unlimited-kilometre vehicle.
- Fuel. Always paid by the renter, and larger 6-berth motorhomes use noticeably more than a 2-berth van, so factor fuel into your total trip budget, especially for long inland or Cape York drives.
- Booking lead time. Booking 125+ days or more ahead typically gives the best combination of price, early bird discounts and vehicle choice. Late bookings in the dry-season peak often pay more and land on the last vehicles left in the fleet.
- Driver age and additional drivers. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge with some brands. Adding a second driver usually costs a flat fee per hire.

Insurance, Bonds and Excess Explained
Every motorhome and campervan hire in Cairns includes a base insurance option and a bond held against the driver's credit card at pickup. Bond size and excess amount depend on the insurance tier you choose. Upgrading to a higher tier reduces the excess you would pay in the event of damage and reduces the bond amount held on your card, so the two move in opposite directions.
Insurance tiers explained
Most Cairns rental brands offer three insurance levels. Names differ between brands, but the structure is consistent.
| Tier | What it covers | Typical excess | Typical bond hold | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Liability | Base-level damage cover included in the daily rate. You pay the full excess if the vehicle is damaged. | $5,000-$7,500 excess per claim | $5,000-$7,500 on credit card | Travellers who accept a higher excess in exchange for the lowest daily rate |
| Liability Reduction | Mid-tier upgrade. Reduces the excess in exchange for a daily fee. | $1,500-$2,500 excess per claim | $1,500-$2,500 on credit card | Most renters - balances daily cost and financial risk |
| Maximum Cover | Top tier. Reduces the excess to zero or near-zero. Often includes single-vehicle rollover, windscreen, tyres, and awning damage. | $0-$250 excess per claim | $0-$500 on credit card | First-time renters, international visitors, and travellers wanting full peace of mind |
Exact bond and excess amounts vary by brand, vehicle and booking dates. Some brands use different names, for example "Standard", "Liability Reduction Option" and "Maximum Cover" at one brand, or "Low Road", "Middle Road" and "High Road" at another. The tier structure is the same either way.
What the bond actually is
The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on the driver's credit or debit card, not a charge. Funds are frozen on the card at pickup and released when the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, refuelled to the same level, and clean inside. If damage occurs during the hire, the brand deducts the excess (or the repair cost up to the excess ceiling) from the bond before releasing the balance.
Most brands require a physical credit or debit card in the driver's name to hold the bond. Cash and pre-paid cards are typically not accepted.
Reducing the excess
You can reduce or eliminate the excess in three ways:
- Upgrade the insurance tier at the time of booking or at pickup, usually the simplest option.
- Buy third-party excess cover from an independent travel insurer, which reimburses your excess if you claim on the rental brand's Standard Liability. This can be cheaper than the brand's own top tier, but you pay the excess first and reclaim it later.
- Add windscreen, tyre, awning, or single-vehicle-rollover cover as separate optional extras with some brands, if you only want to close specific damage gaps.
One point specific to Far North Queensland: standard policies often exclude unsealed-road and single-vehicle incidents, so 4WD tracks like the Bloomfield Track and Cape York usually need a dedicated 4WD policy and provider approval. Check this before you book if your trip leaves the sealed highways.
Best Road Trips from Cairns
Cairns sits at the meeting point of three of the strongest motorhome road trip regions in Australia: the reef and rainforest coast running north to the Daintree, the cooler waterfall country of the Atherton Tablelands inland, and the long east coast and Outback routes heading south and west. The seven routes below each start from a Cairns depot and range from an overnight escape to a full week or more on the road.
- Cairns to Port Douglas & Palm Cove (coastal) Follow the Captain Cook Highway north past Trinity Beach and Palm Cove to Ellis Beach and Port Douglas, with lookouts and swimming stops along the way. An easy first night on the road, good for any vehicle. Best year round.
- Cairns to Cape Tribulation (Great Tropical Drive) Continue north to Mossman Gorge, cross the Daintree River, and reach Cape Tribulation where the rainforest meets the reef. Sealed roads end here for standard vehicles. Best in the dry season, May to October.
- Atherton Tablelands loop Turn inland for waterfalls and crater lakes, including Millaa Millaa Falls, Zillie Falls, the Curtain Fig Tree near Yungaburra, and Lake Barrine. Cooler air and easy camping. Good year round.
- Cairns to Mission Beach & the Cassowary Coast Head south on the Bruce Highway to Babinda Boulders, Josephine Falls and the beaches around Mission Beach. A relaxed southern run with rainforest swimming holes. Watch for cassowaries on the road.
- Cairns to Brisbane (east coast) Follow the Bruce Highway south through Townsville, Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, then on past Bundaberg to the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. Australia’s classic tropical east coast motorhome trip. Consider a one way rental so you finish in Brisbane.
- Cairns to Cape York (4WD only) The big ticket adventure for experienced drivers in a 4WD camper, running through remote tracks including the Bloomfield Track. Requires provider approval, careful fuel planning and a dry season window. Check approved roads before you book.
- Savannah Way (Cairns to the Gulf and beyond) Head west through Undara Volcanic National Park and the Gulf Savannah toward the Northern Territory. A long inland route that rewards travellers with time, and needs a suitable 4WD on the rougher sections.
Every route has powered caravan parks, holiday parks and national park campgrounds along the way, including NRMA Cairns Holiday Park and Crystal Cascades Holiday Park near base. Book campsites ahead during Queensland school holidays and the May to October dry season peak, particularly along the Bruce Highway corridor.
One-way campervan and motorhome rentals from Cairns
A one-way rental lets you pick up your motorhome or campervan in Cairns and drop it off at a depot in another Australian city. It is the standard choice for travellers doing the long east-coast run to Brisbane or Sydney, an inland leg across the Savannah Way, or a cross-continent trip to Darwin or Perth, without doubling back to Cairns at the end. Most major rental brands operate depots in every capital city, so brand-consistent one-way hires are usually available.
How one-way pricing works
One-way relocation fees vary by route, brand, direction, season, and current fleet-repositioning demand. As a guide, expect fees to sit anywhere from $150 to $300+ depending on the route, with shorter runs like Cairns to Brisbane at the lower end, while cross-continent Cairns to Perth or Cairns to Melbourne trips sit at the top.
If you are flexible on dates and direction, look for relocation deals. Brands often need to reposition vehicles between depots after peak season and release those hires at heavily discounted daily rates (sometimes $1 to $25 per day) with a limited number of days and a set fuel allowance. Relocation hires suit travellers with time to spare and a fixed direction to travel.
Every one-way hire is subject to the receiving depot’s opening hours and drop-off inspection process, so plan your final day to arrive during business hours.
