Popular Types of Campervans, RVs & Motorhomes for Hire in Sydney
Sydney offers a wide choice of campervans, RVs, and motorhomes for hire, catering to solo travellers, backpackers, couples, families, and groups. Berth count is the single most important booking decision for a motorhome or campervan hire in Sydney, because it determines who can travel with you, how the bed converts, whether the kitchen is full-size, and whether the vehicle has a built-in bathroom. The categories below cover what Sydney’s rental fleets typically offer.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Sydney?
Motorhome and campervan hire prices in Sydney typically range from $82 for an entry-level 2-Berth campervan in off-peak to $309 for a 6-Berth or luxury motorhome in peak season per day. The final rate depends on vehicle size, brand, season, trip length, insurance option, and how far in advance you book. The table below shows indicative from-prices per day by berth class.
Specific price ranges for different vehicle types include:
- 2-Berth campervans: $82 to $137 per day
- 2-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $168 to $231 per day
- 4-Berth campervans: $94 to $161 per day
- 4-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $195 to $282 per day
- 6-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): $220 to $309 per day
- 4WD campervans: $148 to $315 per day (depending on the berth)
Cheap campervan hire in Sydney
The cheapest campervan hire in Sydney is usually a basic 2-Berth van from a value brand like Spaceships, Jucy, Campervan Village, or Travellers Autobarn booked outside school holidays and outside December-January. To find the lowest price, book at least 6-8 weeks ahead, avoid one-way relocation fees by choosing a return hire, and check the Standard Liability option rather than upgrading to Maximum Cover if you’re comfortable with a higher excess. Relocation deals and promo codes can further reduce the daily rate on selected dates. Search live prices for your travel dates to see the cheapest vehicles available.
Factors affecting prices include seasonal demand, trip duration, and vehicle features. Booking well in advance and traveling during off-peak periods can lead to significant savings. Many companies offer discounts for long-term rentals, and some provide unlimited kilometres in their packages.
What affects Sydney hire prices
Several factors move the daily rate up or down from the table above. Understanding these helps you decide when, what, and how to book for the best value.
- Season and demand. Peak season (roughly mid-December to late January, Easter, NSW school holidays, and long weekends) can lift the daily rate by 30-50% above off-peak. Shoulder months – March, May, June, August, and early November – typically deliver the lowest rates for the same vehicle.
- Vehicle class and berth. A 2-Berth campervan can start from around $82 in off-peak, while a 6-Berth motorhome with wet bathroom and full kitchen can reach $309 in peak. Luxury and 4WD models sit at the top of the range.
- Rental duration. Longer bookings usually earn a discounted daily rate. Many brands drop the per-day price on hires of 21+ days.
- Insurance option. Upgrading from Standard Liability to Liability Reduction or Maximum Cover typically adds $30 on a budget camper to $119 per day on a luxury motorhome, in exchange for a lower excess and a smaller (or zero) bond hold on your credit card.
- One-way relocation fees. Picking up in Sydney and dropping off in another city can add anywhere from $150 to $300 depending on the route, brand, and whether the direction matches a current relocation demand.
- Add-on extras. GPS units, bike racks, camping chairs and tables, portable BBQs, second drivers, and child seats are usually charged per hire or per day. Bedding packs and kitchen kits are included by some brands and extra with others.
- Kilometre policy. Most motorhome hires include unlimited kilometres. Some campervan hires like Campervan Village apply a daily cap (often 200 km/day), with an excess-kilometre charge above that. Long-distance road trips are cheaper on an unlimited-kilometre vehicle.
- Fuel. Fuel is always paid by the renter – larger 6-Berth motorhomes use noticeably more fuel than a 2-Berth van, so factor fuel into your total trip budget, especially for long inland or Outback drives.
- Booking lead time. Booking 125+ days or more ahead typically gives the best combination of price with early bird discounts from brands like Cruisin Motorhomes, and more vehicle choice. Late bookings in peak season often pay more and land on the last vehicles left in the fleet.
- Driver age and additional drivers. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge with some brands. Adding a second driver at the counter usually costs a flat fee per hire.
To get the best deal, compare rates across brands, aim for shoulder seasons if your dates are flexible, and finalise your insurance and extras during the booking flow rather than at the counter.

Insurance, Bonds and Excess Explained
Every motorhome and campervan hire in Sydney includes a base insurance option and a bond held against the driver's credit card at pickup. Bond size and excess amount depend on the insurance tier you choose. Upgrading to a higher tier reduces the excess you'd pay in the event of damage and reduces the bond amount held on your card - the two move in opposite directions.
Insurance tiers explained
Most Sydney rental brands offer three insurance levels. Names differ between brands, but the structure is consistent.
| Tier | What it covers | Typical excess | Typical bond hold | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Liability | Base-level damage cover included in the daily rate. You pay the full excess if the vehicle is damaged. | $5,000-$7,500 excess per claim | $5,000-$7,500 on credit card | Travellers who accept a higher excess in exchange for the lowest daily rate |
| Liability Reduction | Mid-tier upgrade. Reduces the excess in exchange for a daily fee. | $1,500-$2,500 excess per claim | $1,500-$2,500 on credit card | Most renters - balances daily cost and financial risk |
| Maximum Cover | Top tier. Reduces the excess to zero or near-zero. Often includes single-vehicle rollover, windscreen, tyres, and awning damage. | $0-$250 excess per claim | $0-$500 on credit card | First-time renters, international visitors, and travellers wanting full peace of mind |
Exact bond and excess amounts vary by brand, vehicle, and booking dates. Some brands use different names - for example, "Standard", "Liability Reduction Option", and "Maximum Cover" at one brand; "Low Road", "Middle Road", and "High Road" at another. The tier structure is the same either way.
What the bond actually is
The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on the driver's credit or debit card, not a charge. Funds are frozen on the card at pickup and released when the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, refuelled to the same level, and clean inside. If damage occurs during the hire, the brand deducts the excess (or the repair cost up to the excess ceiling) from the bond before releasing the balance.
Most brands require a physical credit or debit card in the driver's name to hold the bond. Cash and pre-paid cards are typically not accepted.
Reducing the excess
You can reduce or eliminate the excess in three ways:
- Upgrade the insurance tier at the time of booking or at pickup - usually the simplest option.
- Buy third-party excess cover from an independent travel insurer, which reimburses your excess if you claim on the rental brand's Standard Liability. This can be cheaper than the brand's own top tier, but you pay the excess first and reclaim it later.
- Add windscreen, tyre, awning, or single-vehicle-rollover cover as separate optional extras with some brands, if you only want to close specific damage gaps.
Read the full insurance, bonds and excess guide before booking to see how each brand's tier structure and add-ons compare.
Best Road Trips from Sydney
Sydney sits at the intersection of three of the strongest motorhome road-trip regions in Australia: the World Heritage Blue Mountains to the west, the Hunter Valley wine country to the north, and hundreds of kilometres of coastline stretching north and south along the Pacific. The eight routes below each start from a Sydney depot and range from an overnight escape to a full week on the road.
- Sydney to the Blue Mountains Cross the Great Western Highway to Katoomba for the Three Sisters at Echo Point, then wind through Blackheath, Mount Victoria, and the Jenolan Caves. Good year-round; cool in winter.
- Sydney to the Hunter Valley Head north on the M1 to Pokolbin for cellar-door tastings across Semillon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay. Book a powered site at a wine-country holiday park and cycle between vineyards.
- Sydney to Byron Bay (coastal) Follow the Pacific Highway north through Port Stephens, Port Macquarie, and Coffs Harbour to Cape Byron. Australia’s classic east-coast motorhome trip.
- Grand Pacific Drive Head south from the Royal National Park across the Sea Cliff Bridge to Wollongong and Kiama, then loop back inland. Best done in daylight for the ocean-cliff crossing.
- Sydney to Jervis Bay Drive south through Nowra to Booderee National Park for Hyams Beach and its famously white sand. Whale watching runs June to November.
- Sydney to Port Stephens Take the M1 north to Nelson Bay for dolphin cruises, the Stockton sand dunes (accessible by 4WD only), and quiet holiday-park camping at Shoal Bay.
- Sydney Loop – Blue Mountains, Hunter, Central Coast Combines the three regions into one circuit: west to the mountains, north to the vineyards, back down the Central Coast to Sydney.
- Sydney to Coffs Harbour and Central Coast A shorter northern run stopping at Terrigal, Newcastle, Forster, and Port Macquarie before turning around at Coffs Harbour and the Big Banana.
Every route has powered caravan parks, holiday parks, and national park campgrounds along the way. Book campsites ahead during NSW school holidays and long weekends, particularly along the Pacific Highway corridor.
One-way campervan and motorhome rentals from Sydney
A one-way rental lets you pick up your motorhome or campervan in Sydney and drop it off at a depot in another Australian city. It’s the standard choice for travellers doing a long east-coast run to Brisbane or Cairns, an inland leg to Adelaide, or a cross-continent trip to Perth or Darwin, without doubling back to Sydney at the end. Most major rental brands operate depots in every capital city, so brand-consistent one-way hires are usually available. See our full one-way campervan rentals service page for how the process works.
How one-way pricing works
One-way relocation fees vary by route, brand, direction, season, and current fleet-repositioning demand. As a guide, expect fees to sit anywhere from $150 to $300+ depending on the route – shorter runs like Sydney → Melbourne or Sydney → Brisbane sit at the lower end, while cross-continent Sydney → Perth or Sydney → Darwin trips sit at the top.
If you’re flexible on dates and direction, look for relocation deals. Brands often need to reposition vehicles between depots after peak season and release those hires at heavily discounted daily rates (sometimes $1 to $25 per day) with a limited number of days and a set fuel allowance. Relocation hires suit travellers with time to spare and a fixed direction to travel.
Every one-way hire is subject to the receiving depot’s opening hours and drop-off inspection process, so plan your final day to arrive during business hours.

Popular one-way routes from Sydney
-
Sydney → Melbourne 878 km · 10-14 days
Follow the coastal route via Jervis Bay, Batemans Bay, and Merimbula, cross the border at Mallacoota, then wind through Lakes Entrance and along the Great Ocean Road (Twelve Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, Port Campbell) before finishing in Melbourne. Inland via the Hume Highway is faster but skips the coastline.
-
Sydney → Brisbane 917 km · 7-10 days
Take the Pacific Highway north, stopping at Port Stephens (Nelson Bay, Stockton Beach dunes), Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour (Big Banana, Sealy Lookout), Byron Bay (Cape Byron lighthouse, Wategos Beach), and the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise, Burleigh Heads) before rolling into Brisbane.
-
Sydney → Cairns 2,421 km · 14-21 days
The full east-coast run: Pacific Highway to Brisbane, then Bruce Highway through the Sunshine Coast, Fraser Island access via Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, the Whitsundays (Airlie Beach), Townsville, and Mission Beach before reaching Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.
-
Sydney → Adelaide 1,375 km · 7-12 days
Head south-west via the Hume Highway to Canberra, then across to the Riverina wine country around Griffith, on through Mildura and the Murray River region, and into Adelaide via the Barossa Valley for its Shiraz cellar doors.
-
Sydney → Perth 3,934 km · 21-30 days
Via Adelaide, then across the Nullarbor Plain (Bunda Cliffs, the 146 km Balladonia-to-Caiguna straight – the longest straight road in Australia), Norseman, and Kalgoorlie’s goldfields before dropping down to Perth. Plan fuel and water stops carefully across the Nullarbor.
-
Sydney → Hobart 1,596 km + ferry · 12-18 days
Drive to Melbourne, board the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Geelong (Station Pier / Corio Quay) across Bass Strait to Devonport, then head south via Launceston, the Tamar Valley wine region, Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, and Freycinet’s Wineglass Bay before reaching Hobart. Book the ferry well ahead – motorhome spaces sell out fast in peak season.
-
Sydney → Alice Springs 2,773 km · 14-21 days
Head inland via Dubbo (Taronga Western Plains Zoo), Broken Hill, and the opal-mining town of Coober Pedy (underground dugouts), then continue north on the Stuart Highway to Alice Springs. Optional side trip to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park adds roughly 900 km return. Long stretches with limited fuel – carry water and check tyres.
-
Sydney → Darwin 3,942 km · 21-35 days
Two main routes: inland via Dubbo, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, and the Stuart Highway through Tennant Creek and Katherine; or coastal-then-inland via Brisbane and the Bruce/Landsborough Highways through central Queensland to Mount Isa before crossing into the NT. Both routes traverse remote country – check road conditions and stock up on supplies in each town.
-
Sydney → Broome 4,475 km · 28-42 days
The longest run on this list. Two options: the southern arc via Adelaide, the Nullarbor, Perth, and up the Coral Coast (Ningaloo, Exmouth); or the northern arc via Alice Springs, Katherine, and the Great Northern Highway through Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing. Best driven April to October (dry season) – the Kimberley wet season closes roads and floods low crossings.
