What the bond actually is

The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on the driver's credit or debit card, not a charge. Funds are frozen on the card at pickup and released when the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, refuelled to the same level, and clean inside. If damage occurs during the hire, the brand deducts the excess (or the repair cost up to the excess ceiling) from the bond before releasing the balance.

Most brands require a physical credit or debit card in the driver's name to hold the bond. Cash and pre-paid cards are typically not accepted.

Reducing the excess

Book your first night’s campsite before you fly in, and pick a site within 60-90 minutes’ drive of your Sydney depot. Long-haul jet lag plus a first-time motorhome handover plus late-afternoon Sydney traffic is a bad combination for driving further than necessary on day one.

  • Lane Cove River Tourist Park (Lane Cove) — closest large caravan park to the CBD, powered and unpowered sites, camp kitchen, ~20-30 min from Banksmeadow and Rosebery depots.
  • Sheralee Tourist Caravan Park (Rockdale) — close to Sydney Airport, powered sites, ~10-15 min from Botany-area depots.
  • Sydney Lakeside Holiday Park (Narrabeen) — northern beaches location, powered and cabin sites, ~40-50 min from most depots.

Berth count is the single most important booking decision – matched to your travelling group, not to the “roomiest” option. A 2-Berth for a couple is easier to park, easier to drive on narrow roads, and cheaper per day than a 4 or 6-Berth. You need a full unrestricted car licence (Class C in Australia or the equivalent from your home country) to drive any motorhome or campervan hire in Sydney up to 4.5 tonnes GVM – which covers every standard 2-Berth to 6-Berth vehicle. Learner (L) and provisional (P1) licences are not accepted by any major rental brand, only by Spaceships, and Campervan Village if you are at least 18, and have held your license for more than 6 months. (P2) licenses are only accepted by Spaceships, Campervan Village, Travellers Autobarn, and Jucy in Sydney.

Additional requirements:
  • Minimum driver age – generally 21 with all major brands. A few brands accept drivers aged 18+ with a young-driver surcharge.
  • International visitors – an English-language driver’s licence from your home country is accepted at pickup; non-English-language licences must be accompanied by a certified English translation or an International Driving Permit.
  • Additional drivers – must be present at pickup with their own physical licence. Most brands charge a per-hire or per-day additional-driver fee.
  • Physical credit or debit card in the driver’s name – required to hold the bond. Cash and pre-paid cards are typically not accepted.

Most motorhome hires in Sydney include unlimited kilometres – you can drive as far as you like within the rental period without exceeding a distance cap. Some campervan hires (particularly value-brand and shorter-hire configurations) like Campervan Village apply a daily kilometre allowance, often around 200 km per day, with an excess-kilometre charge applied to anything over that. Confirm the kilometre policy on your rental agreement before you book.

Fuel policy across all major brands is full-to-full: the vehicle is provided with a full tank at pickup and must be returned refuelled to the same level. Fuel type (diesel or unleaded) is stated on the dashboard sticker, the fuel-cap flap, and the rental agreement – double-check before your first fill. Getting the wrong fuel is not covered by any insurance tier and results in a large tow, drain, and mechanical bill.

Sydney’s toll roads are fully electronic – there are no cash booths and no way to pay in person as you drive through. Every toll is captured by number-plate cameras and billed to a linked account (Linkt or E-Tag). Rental brands handle this in one of two ways:
  • Brand-managed toll account. The rental brand runs its own toll account and passes the toll costs – plus an admin fee of $1.70 to $3.45 per toll transaction – to your credit card after the hire ends. This is the default with most Sydney brands and is the easiest option for short trips.
  • Renter-managed toll pass. You set up your own Linkt casual account before pickup and link it to the rental vehicle’s number plate. Cheaper for long trips or heavy toll-road use, but requires setup effort.

Give yourself 30 minutes for the vehicle handover – don’t accept a rushed walkthrough. The pre-departure inspection is the single most important moment for protecting yourself against unfair damage claims at return. Handover checklist:
  • Walk around the exterior and photograph or video every existing scratch, dent, and paint chip on all four sides, plus the roofline where visible.
  • Confirm all existing damage is noted on the vehicle inspection report – sign nothing until every mark you can see is recorded.
  • Check tyre condition, including tread depth and sidewall damage, and confirm the spare tyre, jack, and wheel brace are present and accessible.
  • Note the fuel level at pickup – most brands hand over the vehicle full, but some use a “return-at-same-level” starting point that is not full.
  • Check the gas bottle is present, connected, and turned on. LPG may power the cooker and, in some models, the fridge and heater.
  • Confirm the water tank status – fresh-water tank full or empty, grey-water tank empty, and cassette toilet emptied and clean.
  • Test the electrics – house battery, interior lights, water pump, fridge on both 12V and 240V, and the awning wind-out and wind-in functions.
  • Check the inventory against the packing list, including bedding, pillows, cookware, cutlery, chairs, and a table if included. Missing items should be logged before you drive off.
  • Confirm the roadside-assistance contact and toll-handling policy verbally before signing.
