How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Gold Coast?
Motorhome and campervan hire prices on the Gold Coast typically range from around A$95 for an entry-level 2-Berth campervan in off-peak to A$241 for a 6-Berth or luxury motorhome in peak season per day. The final rate depends on vehicle size, brand, season, trip length, insurance option, and how far in advance you book. The table below shows indicative from-prices per day by berth class. Specific price ranges for different vehicle types include:- 2-Berth campervans: A$95 to A$119 per day
- 4-Berth campervans: A$95 to A$119 per day
- 6-Berth with bathrooms (toilet and shower): A$178 to A$241 per day
Cheap campervan hire in Gold Coast
The cheapest campervan hire on the Gold Coast is usually a basic 2-berth van from a value brand booked outside school holidays and outside the summer beach peak. The cheapest months tend to be the shoulder season of April, May, and November, especially for mid-week bookings and outside school-holiday periods. To find the lowest daily rate, book at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead, avoid one-way relocation fees by choosing a return hire, and consider the Standard Liability option rather than upgrading to full cover if you are comfortable with a higher excess. Relocation deals and promo codes can reduce the daily rate further on selected dates. Note that there are no rental depots inside Gold Coast Airport, but most are a short drive away, and some suppliers offer a free shuttle with your rental. One thing to weigh up: picking up in nearby Brisbane gives you access to an even larger number of brands, so it’s worth comparing both pickup points, though collecting on the Gold Coast keeps you closest to the beaches and theme parks and avoids the transfer north. What affects Gold Coast hire prices
Several factors move the daily rate up or down from the table above. Understanding these helps you decide when, what, and how to book for the best value.- Season and demand. Peak season on the Gold Coast is the summer school holidays (Saturday 12 December 2026 to Tuesday 26 January 2027), the autumn break including Easter (3 to 19 April 2026), and other school holidays, when daily rates can run 30 to 50% above off-peak. Unlike Hobart, there is no winter festival spike: the subtropical climate keeps winter (June to August, outside the 27 June to 12 July school holidays) mild and quiet, making it good value. Demand also jumps around the Gold Coast 500 Supercars race (23 to 25 October 2026) and Schoolies Week in the last two weeks of November. The cheapest stretches are the shoulder months, especially February, March, May, and early-to-mid November, for mid-week bookings outside school holidays.
- Vehicle class and berth. A 2-berth campervan sits at the bottom of the range, while a 6-berth motorhome with a wet bathroom and full kitchen sits near the top. Luxury and 4WD models sit at the highest daily rates. Note that while 4WD campers are available, this part of Australia is heavily populated and genuine remote off-road touring nearby is limited, so a standard 2-berth is usually the better value for a beach-and-hinterland trip.
- Rental duration. Longer bookings usually earn a discounted daily rate. Many brands drop the per-day price on hires of around 21+ days, which suits an east-coast run up toward Cairns or south to Sydney and back.
- Insurance option. Upgrading from Standard Liability to a liability-reduction or maximum-cover option adds a daily fee, in exchange for a lower excess and a smaller or zero bond hold on your credit card.
- One-way relocation fees. Picking up on the Gold Coast and dropping off elsewhere, most commonly Brisbane, Sydney, or Cairns, can add a one-way fee depending on the route, brand, and whether the direction matches current relocation demand.
- Add-on extras. GPS units, bike racks, camping chairs and tables, portable BBQs, second drivers, and child seats are usually charged per hire or per day. Bedding packs and kitchen kits are included by some brands and extra with others.
- Kilometre policy. Most motorhome hires include unlimited kilometres. Some campervan hires apply a daily cap with an excess-kilometre charge above it, so long east-coast drives are cheaper on an unlimited-kilometre vehicle. Check the policy before you book.
- Fuel. Always paid by the renter, and larger 6-Berth motorhomes use noticeably more fuel than a 2-Berth van, so factor fuel into your total trip budget, especially for longer runs into the Hinterland or up the Bruce Highway.
- Booking lead time. Booking 125+ days or more ahead typically gives the best combination of price with early bird discounts from brands like Cruisin Motorhomes, and more vehicle choice. Late bookings in peak season often pay more and land on the last vehicles left in the fleet.
- Driver age and additional drivers. The standard minimum age is 21, though some brands rent to drivers 18+ with extra fees and documentation. Drivers under 25 pay a young-driver surcharge with some brands. Adding a second driver at the counter usually costs a flat fee per hire.

Insurance, Bonds and Excess Explained
Every motorhome and campervan hire on the Gold Coast includes a base insurance option and a bond held against the driver's credit card at pickup. Bond size and excess amount depend on the insurance tier you choose. Upgrading to a higher tier reduces the excess you'd pay in the event of damage and reduces the bond amount held on your card, the two move in opposite directions.
Insurance tiers explained
Most Gold Coast rental brands offer three insurance levels. Names differ between brands, but the structure is consistent.
| Tier | What it covers | Typical excess | Typical bond hold | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Liability | Base-level damage cover included in the daily rate. You pay the full excess if the vehicle is damaged. | $5,000-$7,500 excess per claim | $5,000-$7,500 on credit card | Travellers who accept a higher excess in exchange for the lowest daily rate |
| Liability Reduction | Mid-tier upgrade. Reduces the excess in exchange for a daily fee. | $1,500-$2,500 excess per claim | $1,500-$2,500 on credit card | Most renters - balances daily cost and financial risk |
| Maximum Cover | Top tier. Reduces the excess to zero or near-zero. Often includes single-vehicle rollover, windscreen, tyres, and awning damage. | $0-$250 excess per claim | $0-$500 on credit card | First-time renters, international visitors, and travellers wanting full peace of mind |
Exact bond and excess amounts vary by brand, vehicle, and booking dates. Some brands use different names, for example, "Standard", "Liability Reduction Option", and "Maximum Cover" at one brand; "Low Road", "Middle Road", and "High Road" at another. The tier structure is the same either way.
What the bond actually is
The bond is a pre-authorisation hold on the driver's credit or debit card, not a charge. Funds are frozen on the card at pickup and released when the vehicle is returned undamaged, on time, refuelled to the same level, and clean inside. If damage occurs during the hire, the brand deducts the excess (or the repair cost up to the excess ceiling) from the bond before releasing the balance.
Most brands require a physical credit or debit card in the driver's name to hold the bond. Cash and pre-paid cards are typically not accepted.
Reducing the excess
You can reduce or eliminate the excess in three ways:
- Upgrade the insurance tier at the time of booking or at pickup, usually the simplest option.
- Buy third-party excess cover from an independent travel insurer, which reimburses your excess if you claim on the rental brand's Standard Liability. This can be cheaper than the brand's own top tier, but you pay the excess first and reclaim it later.
- Add windscreen, tyre, awning, or single-vehicle-rollover cover as separate optional extras with some brands, if you only want to close specific damage gaps.
Best Road Trips from Gold Coast
The Gold Coast is a practical base for road trips inland to the hinterland, south to Northern New South Wales, and north along the Queensland coast. Each route below suits a different trip length, from a single day to a full one way east coast journey. Choose a route that matches your hire duration and drop off plans.- Gold Coast to the Hinterland Climb inland to Springbrook National Park, Lamington National Park, and Tamborine Mountain for rainforest walks, waterfalls, and the Natural Bridge glow worm cave. Good year round; misty and cool in winter.
- Gold Coast to Byron Bay Cross the NSW border through Tweed Heads to Byron Bay for the lighthouse walk, surf beaches, and the Northern Rivers hinterland. Good year round; busy over summer and school holidays.
- Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast Drive north past Brisbane to Noosa Heads, the Sunshine Coast beaches, and the Glass House Mountains. Best in spring and autumn; warm and humid in summer.
- Gold Coast to Sydney Follow the east coast south through Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, and Port Macquarie towards Sydney. A popular one way route; comfortable year round, wettest in late summer.
- Gold Coast to Cairns Head north through the Whitsundays and Townsville to Tropical North Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef. A long one way journey best suited to extended hires; avoid the wet season from November to April.
Every route has powered caravan parks, holiday parks, and national park campgrounds along the way. Book campsites ahead during Queensland school holidays and long weekends, particularly along the Pacific Motorway (M1) corridor and around the popular coastal strip from Coolangatta up to Main Beach.
One-way campervan and motorhome rentals from Gold Coast
A one-way rental lets you pick up your motorhome or campervan on the Gold Coast and drop it off at a depot in another Australian city. It is the standard choice for travellers doing a long east-coast run to Sydney or Cairns, a short transfer to Brisbane, or a cross-country trip to Melbourne, without doubling back to the Gold Coast at the end. Most major rental brands operate depots in every capital city, so brand-consistent one-way hires are usually available. How one-way pricing works
One-way relocation fees vary by route, brand, direction, season, and current fleet-repositioning demand. As a guide, expect fees to sit anywhere from $150 to $300+ depending on the route. Shorter runs like Gold Coast to Brisbane or Gold Coast to Sydney sit at the lower end, while longer Gold Coast to Cairns or Gold Coast to Melbourne trips sit at the top If you are flexible on dates and direction, look for relocation deals. Brands often need to reposition vehicles between depots after peak season and release those hires at heavily discounted daily rates (sometimes $1 to $25 per day) with a limited number of days and a set fuel allowance. Relocation hires suit travellers with time to spare and a fixed direction to travel. Every one-way hire is subject to the receiving depot’s opening hours and drop-off inspection process, so plan your final day to arrive during business hours.
